The preparation of a 40% additional customs duty for Chinese origin cars on the one hand, and the introduction of Europe’s new GSR II standards at the beginning of July, caused the market to be more intense in June than ever before.
Hüsamettin Yalçın, the General Manager of Cardata, made statements about the Turkish automotive market.
“The market will not shrink”
Yalçın predicted that the Turkish automotive market will not shrink by 30-35% in 2024 and will exceed 1 million units.
Yalçın said that the zero-kilometer automotive sales, which closed at the level of 480 thousand units in the first 5 months of the year, will reach 600 thousand units with the month of June.
Stating that the market will close at the level of 100-120 thousand units in June, Hüsamettin Yalçın said:
The campaigns that have been ongoing since the beginning of the year, especially in June, have reached a more ambitious level. In June, 26% of the vehicles sold in the market, that is, one out of every 4 vehicles, went on sale, and the average discount rate reached 6%.
Emphasizing that the campaigns prepared by the brands to liquidate some vehicles in stock until July 7 significantly increased the June sales, Hüsamettin Yalçın stated:
‘The discounts of up to 200-300 thousand TL activated by the brands to liquidate the stocks attracted consumers to showrooms.
In addition, the effects of the 40% additional Customs Duty for Chinese brands, which will come into effect on July 8, were clearly felt in June.
Due to the fact that Chinese brands’ prices will increase after July 8, a significant intensity was observed among consumers.’

In addition, despite the upcoming additional tax, Chinese brands engaged in dumping and offered affordable cars.
Considering all these, we believe that the market will exceed 1 million units by the end of the year.
Contrary to some analyses and comments made since the beginning of the year, a 30-35% decline in the market will not occur.
