Alperen Yılmaz, Deha Talu Bozkurt, and Ipek Ozdemir, with the support of their advisor teacher Emin Terzi, prepared the project titled “Improving Musculoskeletal Health and Ergonomic Sitting Habits with Artificial Intelligence Supported Posture Tracking System.”
The project aims to prevent physical discomfort caused by postural disorders, and it won first place in the biology category at the TUBITAK 2204-A High School Students Research Projects Competition.
One of the goals of the project is to reduce the need for imported support products used in the physical therapy processes of diseases related to postural disorders, thus contributing to the country’s economy.
The students, Alperen Yılmaz, Deha Talu Bozkurt, and Ipek Ozdemir, decided to work on this project after realizing the importance of sitting in the correct posture in daily life. They conducted research, consulted with a physiotherapist and occupational safety specialist, observed health problems, and developed software solutions.
After working on the project for 6 months, they developed a project that records the correct and incorrect posture times of an individual in daily life. The artificial intelligence application tracks the person’s posture, detects any tendencies to lean left or right, and stores this information in the background.
The application also suggests physical activities at specific intervals to help the person relax and advises seeking professional help if the problem persists. The system can work on camera devices such as phones, computers, and tablets, and the team continues to improve the design and software.
At the final competition in Ankara, Alperen Yılmaz expressed their goal of winning first place in the biology category for Trabzon.
Advisor teacher Emin Terzi highlighted the wide range of uses of the project, from education to the business world, and emphasized that the students developed technical skills, problem-solving abilities, artificial intelligence algorithms, and hardware integration through this project.
The Provincial Director of National Education, Hasan Uygun, visited the center to congratulate the project team for their success. He stated that they aim to increase awareness and usage of technology related to artificial intelligence by teaching technology literacy to students from the ground up.
Uygun explained that students can find workshops and artificial intelligence opportunities at the center to improve themselves scientifically and technologically.
